We are developing an innovative self-growing paint that after application grows into vertical moss coverage on outdoor walls in cities, giving a new dimension to currently available green walls which are proven to be effective in combating the consequences of the current climate crisis. Our product is a paste-like structure, containing moss spores, binding material, and moisture protection for the wall. It is directly related to solving the problem of urban heat islands. We aim to make it available not only for professionals directly related to construction and planning but also local communities and neighbourhoods. With this we aim to create a sense of ownership and empower people to contribute to urban climate improvement. Moss walls have various benefits. They can purify the air and serve as an insulating layer on the building to save energy. The evapotranspiration of the moss is beneficial for fire prevention and cooling of the surroundings. The high surface area provides sound insulation and the more natural aesthetic, favorable for modern design, of cities contributes to improved mental health. AirLeg
AirLeg is a project that was born during ETH Week 2021 and came to life trought the SPH hatschery program. The team is composed by Michelangelo (medical technology), Sebastian (computer science) and Justyna (physics). Together we want to solve the issue that current prosthetic sockets are undynamic and do not adapt to volume fluctuation of the residual limb. AirLeg has the goal to develop a platform that enables amputees in need to have access to a personalized dynamic prosthetic socket. Therefore, we aim to enhance comfortability, while improving affordability and accessibility of prosthetic sockets. To achieve this we exploit smartphone-performed photogrammetry and low-budget FDM 3D printing.Our current approach is to manually modifiy 3D scans from the residual limb to model the prosthetic socket. Yet, we are aspiring toward AI-based automatic modelling of the socket geometry from 3D scan data.To date, we built the first prototype of a functional, low-cost 3D printed lower limb prosthetic socket that is compatible with conventional prosthetic attachment system. Our next step is to implement a 3D printable pneumatic/hydraulic system able to automatically adapt and compensate for volumetric fluctuation of the stump....
AITHON
We build flying robots for force-intensive tasks! This saves workers lives and improves construction site efficiency. In Switzerland alone, over 9000 construction workers injure themselves severely through falling. AITHON has seen this issue and has created a flying robot to drill holes and perform other manipulative tasks on concrete walls. Not only can we create forces of up to 150 Newton horizontally, but also apply these forces with millimetre-precision. Besides keeping the construction worker out of harms way this can improve efficiency, by eliminating the need for scaffolding. Alpha-synuclein is a protein primarily found in the brain, playing a key role in neuronal function. In Parkinson's disease (PD), it misfolds and forms aggregates known as Lewy bodies, which are hallmark features of the condition. We are keen on exploring the protein structure and function by comparing different model organisms such as the yeast types Saccharomyces cerevisae and Pichia Pastoris. Additionally we’re studying various post translational modifications and how they influence the protein structure. Similarly, an excellent title and thumbnail can cause the viewership of a mediocre video to skyrocket. Until now, it was impossible to know how well a title & thumbnail would perform without actually trying them out. Creators have to rely on their gut feeling to choose the title & thumbnail for their videos, where suboptimal choices result in significant revenue loss and much slower channel growth. Project TELL At its very first participation at the Spaceport America Cup, ARIS won the Charles Hoult Award for Modeling and Simulations for its technical achievement – one of the ten main awards of the competition. Despite a motor failure and the resulting explosion of the rocket a few seconds into the flight, the project TELL was very well received for its technical and operational excellence. Project HEIDI With project HEIDI, ARIS – in the second year of its existence – competed for the second time at the Spaceport America Cup in New Mexico and made the second place in its category of 10’000ft and commercial-off-the-shelf solid motors with a nominal flight. Project RHEA As a team of 10 students, project RHEA developed the first ever student-built rocket engine test stand in only one year, which lays the auspicious foundation for future engine development projects. Additionally, the first generation of a hybrid rocket engine was designed, manufactured and tested. Project EULER In the third year, project EULER is aimed for the first flight to a height of 30’000ft at the SPAC 2020 in New Mexico. Project IRIDE The focus project IRIDE developed the next generation of hybrid rocket engine. Several test firings with different injector and nozzle configurations led to a peak thrust of almost 8 kN and to firing duration of up to 16 seconds. Project PICCARD, DAEDALUS and PHOENIX In 2020, three new teams started to space career with the aim of launching the rocket PICCARD at EuRoC with the self developed hybrid rocket engine by team DAEDALUS. Team PHOENIX demonstrated a first version of an Automated Guided Recovery mechanism for sounding rockets. Projects 2021 In 2021 ARIS launches three additional projects joining the portfolio of last years projects. In the coming year ARIS will be developing a CubeSat, a Liquid Rocket Engine and an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle....

Bottleplus
bottleplus allows you to make you own sparkling water on the go - wherever and whenever you want. It works with an integrated carboniser that is enough for 10 bottles (0.6 liters each) of sparkling water. If the carboniser is empty, simply charge it at the refilling station at home. By carbonating drinking water with bottleplus, you avoid plastic bottles and reduce your environmental footprint by 90% when drinking sparkling water. Also, 1 liter of sparkling water only costs you 15-20 cents. The modular bottle base is the heart of our bottle. It can be easily unscrewed, replaced and cleaned. Today it is primarily a carboniser. In the future, for example, it will also be used as a water filter and flavour carrier. One day we will be able to offer (almost) every drink with it. And would come very close to our vision of sustainable beverage consumption....

We enable herbicide-free precision farming for a sustainable future. Weeding is a significant problem in farming coupled with high costs. Conventionally, herbicides are used to treat the problem, but with more being prohibited every year, as well as a general trend to organic farming, alternatives are needed. While weeds between crop rows can be removed by tractor mounted cultivators, weeds within the rows must be removed by hand. However, with the increasing number of organic farmers, the required workforce is difficult to find and automation is necessary. We propose a small autonomous rover which drives through the field and removes weeds close to the crops using a laser-based module. Any vegetable grown in a row is a possible....

CellX is developing bacteria-based solutions for cost-efficient and sustainable treatment of industrial chemical waste.Industries producing hazardous chemical waste do not have access to adequate disposal methods. Conventional disposal methods are either filtering or concentrating recalcitrant pollutants to ultimately incinerate them. This incineration step is costly and and harmful as it emits large amounts of CO2.We provide a sustainable alternative to incineration. We create high-performance bacterial products to effectively degrade industrial chemicals. To find the right bacteria against specific pollutants, we use our patent-pending micro-techology to attract and capture bacteria in water environment. These bacteria are then scaled into waste treatment products capable of treating PFAS, pharmcaeuticals, pesticides and micro-plastics....

Sports with health-related focus have boomed in the last decade. The popularity of sports like running, or going to the gym has seen an unprecedented rise in the 2010s. Recent sports and market research shows that technological gadgets are the main reason for that new trend. The availability of apps or smart watches that track user’s sport activity, motivate people to continue or even start following a fitness routine. These devices are available for almost any individual and unstructured sport, including running, cycling and weight lifting. However, such devices don’t offer today an accurate way to measure swimming activity. This is unfortunate, given swimming is one of the very few “low impact” sports, placing minimal burden on joints, ligaments and bones. Yet, at the same time, it is a high-intensity full body workout. With CHAZE we want to unleash the potential of swimming to make fitness and healthy exercise widely adopted. To do so, we are building a hand-wearable smart band. When a swimmer wears the band, the band’s sensors record the swimmer’s motion and pressure. This data allows our app to provide the swimmer with valuable feedback: An overview of the pace, distance, force and further metrics lets users check on their performance. A visualization and analysis of their stroke further lets them fine-tune their technique. AI automatically generates a daily schedule based on your NPC's personality. They might oversleep, skip meals, rush to school, have silly conversations with friends, come back, stay up a bit late on social media, and then go to sleep... AI generates such daily life of your favorite character. NPC conversations are generated in real-time by LLM. And animations, too! Using our proprietary technology, AI predicts and outputs appropriate facial expressions and body animations from over 1,000 motion data options based on conversations and schedules. Scientific laboratory equipment is often stored unused after its standard usage time, and sadly by default eventually ends up in the trash. In many cases the equipment is still functional, and potentially exactly what a school or university elsewhere needs for the training of talented students. EquipSent seeks to put such resources to better and more sustainable use by redistributing unused devices from high-income countries to partner institutions in low-income countries. Laboratory equipment is a fundamental component of education at university level, yet it is often lacking in low-income countries due to high acquisition costs. We promote access to adequate education by facilitating transfers of out-of-use, functional equipment to educational institutions in need. As students at ETH Zurich, we appreciate the extensive practical experience offered along with theoretical education in our studies. However, in many institutions globally, practical experience with laboratory instruments is not offered due to financial limitations. Young people with great potential leave their home country and contribute to science and development in other countries, which results in a “brain drain”. In companies and research institutions of high-income countries, slightly outdated equipment is often not used after replacement with a newer device. The aim of EquipSent (ES) is to organize equipment transfers from European donors to universities and schools in low-income countries, thus enabling the hands-on training crucial for adequate education. ERducation is a small effort to use existing augmented reality, computer graphics and household smartphones to provide affordable solutions that make teaching for teachers and learning for primary school students, simpler and fun.Learning Chemistry Many students with parents from non-academic backgrounds or from underprivileged households do not have the resources to seek extra tutoring and do not have the possibility of optimal academic guidance at home. Some students face learning challenges like ADHD or Dyslexia. These students are more likely to underperform at school and schools may not have dedicated resources to target and uplift these students. At Hephaistos, we are revolutionising the chemical, agricultural, and pharmaceutical industries with our innovative approach to enzyme catalysis. In today's rapidly evolving industries, the demand for efficient and sustainable processes is greater than ever. Conventional chemical synthesis, which is at the core of many industrial processes today, often relies on harsh conditions, toxic reagents and requires substantial energy, making it both environmentally and economically inefficient. However, nature itself presents a solution: enzymes. These natural biocatalysts operate under mild conditions, with high specificity and precision, create minimal by-products, while catalysing the same reactions used in conventional chemical synthesis. Despite their immense potential, suitable enzymes for all industrial applications are not always already found in nature. To solve this problem, we have created Hephaistos, a machine-learning (ML) model that learns from atomistic 3D structure data of existing enzymes. By using cutting-edge tools in protein engineering and bioinformatics, our model will be able to generate novel catalytic cores for any desired reaction – even on substrates not found in nature. The Instant Windows Project aims at providing an inexpensive and reliable method to restore broken windows in conflict zones and areas affected by natural disasters. With Instant Windows, we offer a solution to quickly and easily repair broken windows by using a patent pending, translucent double-layer plastic sheet. It provides both daylight as well as insulation. A broken window may seem like a small problem – but depending on the climate, it can render homes uninhabitable, making their residents more vulnerable, endangering their health, and threatening them with displacement or homelessness. Every year, millions of people around the world are driven into this cycle of vulnerability for different reasons. One major reason is conflict. The Instant Windows project aims to intervene early on by offering a simple, inexpensive replacement for broken windows, restoring people’s shelter and preventing a slide into displacement and further vulnerability. Conflict simultaneously increases the risk of broken windows and makes them more difficult to repair: markets in affected areas are understocked, services are disrupted, and people’s financial resources are depleted. This project aims to create a menstrual collection device to be used in reduced-gravity to allow astronauts to transform menstrual-blood (currently seen as waste) as a resource in regenerative life support systems in long term space missions.Two prototypes have been created and tested in parabolic flights. We are now developing a third new design which builds on the lessons of the last iterations. The project started when discussing feminine hygiene management in space with some experts from space agencies. Turns out, not only is menstrual-blood not talked about in a spaceflight context, but it also contains an incredible amount of potential to be re-used, both on Earth and in space!
