Blueprint Bio
We aim to develop a next-generation enzymatic DNA synthesis technology that enables rapid, low-cost, and sustainable production of complex nucleic acids. This platform will empower synthetic biology, drug discovery, and vaccine development. We have developed a novel engineered enzyme capable of template-independent DNA synthesis that can incorporate reversibly blocked nucleotides. Initial validation experiments confirmed its activity. We are optimising reaction conditions to further improve synthesis efficiency. Our goal is to demonstrate the enzymatic synthesis of a small gene using blocked nucleotides and further engineer the enzyme to enhance performance. The project started at the end of Paola’s PhD on polymerase engineering for xenobiotic nucleic acid (XNA) synthesis, when she explored the idea of engineering a novel polymerase for de novo DNA, RNA, and XNA synthesis. Early experiments showed promising results. During her postdoctoral research at ETH Zurich, she met Jelmi and Jan-Phillip, and together they decided to further develop the project and explore its potential....
CFAO3D
Our vision is to make dental care safer and more transparent by empowering dentists to meet regulatory standards effortlessly while prioritizing patient care and ensuring complete transparency in treatment. CFAO3D offers a cloud-based solution that streamlines dental implant and prostheses traceability, easing the process for dental professionals to meet regulatory standards. Our traceability system provides patients with clear treatment details, improving safety and transparency. Our story began with the challenge our father faced in managing dental implant and prosthetics traceability, a new process surgeons are not trained for. To address this, we created a simple Excel prototype that quickly evolved into a web app and, eventually, a cloud-based solution available to all dentists. Today, we collaborate with implant manufacturers to further streamline traceability, ensuring seamless integration and improved patient care. ...

We are two long-time friends, a certified beer sommelier and a 10 years homebrewer, both engineers, who wanted to enjoy our favorite beers without having to bear with the consequences of alcohol. As long distance runners, we like to reward ourselves after a run and crafted the ideal beers for these events! We've secured our industrial production and launched our first beer in the first bars. DIAVOLO wants to give everyone the chance to choose the beer they deserve....

The hormone replacement industry was estimated to be 18.7 USD in 2022.The "one size fits all" approach is ineffective, causes headaches, mood changes and many more problems to women.Fempatch aims to create aptamer-based biosensors that measure concentration of estrogen and progesterone in blood at the comfort of your own home to model your unique cycle.We were part of the BioIncubate program in 2024 and supported by the SPH Life Science Lab....

Helmit is an AI-powered app that protects children on social media from threats like cyberbullying, online predators and inappropriate content. Unlike other apps, Helmit runs fully on-device (no cloud) and offers the most effective chat monitoring that is set up in under 2 min. Lumova
Since July 2025, we talked to over 20 care home staff to understand their needs, built our first prototype in August and ran 8 demos in September. After improving the system in October, we now offer weekly movement sessions in three care homes until the end of 2025. Our goal is to make exercise fun, easy to use, and possible without staff support. Next, we plan to involve students as session leaders and later create a version that residents can use more independently. I, Aurel Berger, am a Movement Scientist from ETH Zurich and was inspired by my own grandparents’ struggles with mobility loss and rehabilitation. Seeing how quickly my once-sportive grandfather lost his independence in a care home motivated me to create a more engaging way to stay active. I met my co-founder Tumen Dambiev, a Data Scientist, through the Talent Kick program, where we connected over our shared mission to improve the quality of life of older adults. ...
Menstruation in space
This project aims to create a menstrual collection device to be used in reduced-gravity to allow astronauts to transform menstrual-blood (currently seen as waste) as a resource in regenerative life support systems in long term space missions.Two prototypes have been created and tested in parabolic flights. We are now developing a third new design which builds on the lessons of the last iterations. The project started when discussing feminine hygiene management in space with some experts from space agencies. Turns out, not only is menstrual-blood not talked about in a spaceflight context, but it also contains an incredible amount of potential to be re-used, both on Earth and in space! Whilst the main motivation of this project is from a scientific stand-point, it also aims to open a discussion on "taboo" or "dirty" waste and the extent to which we can create value from it....
MEWELL
MeWell is a young student and staff organization with the focus on providing both professional and community-focused activities around raising awareness of mental wellbeing and fighting metal health stigma at the universities in Zurich. For this purpose, MeWell offers a range of engaging activities focused on fighting mental health stigma in academia. Our events cover two main areas: 1. Mental health awareness Our mental health awareness program consists of educational activities which inform and teach our community about various aspects of mental health such as: promoting mental wellbeing, recognizing the signs and symptoms of poor mental health, and talks covering current research. We built an open-source 3D bioprinter to connect the Life Science Lab and Makerspace. Starting with tie-dye bacteria printing on fabric, we aim to make bioprinting accessible, inspire experimentation, and design another printer🧫🐙✨ We have built our 3D bioprinter following an open-source protocol and validated it with some first test prints. Our next step is to establish a reliable workflow by printing tie-dye with bacteria on fabric to better understand the system. As we gain experience, we aim to explore additional bioengineering applications and ultimately use our insights to design a more advanced next-generation bioprinter. Our project began after several setbacks with previous ideas, when we decided we wanted to build something tangible and came across an open-source protocol for a 3D bioprinter.
