This project aims to create a menstrual collection device to be used in reduced-gravity to allow astronauts to transform menstrual-blood (currently seen as waste) as a resource in regenerative life support systems in long term space missions.
Two prototypes have been created and tested in parabolic flights. We are now developing a third new design which builds on the lessons of the last iterations.

The project started when discussing feminine hygiene management in space with some experts from space agencies. Turns out, not only is menstrual-blood not talked about in a spaceflight context, but it also contains an incredible amount of potential to be re-used, both on Earth and in space!
Whilst the main motivation of this project is from a scientific stand-point, it also aims to open a discussion on "taboo" or "dirty" waste and the extent to which we can create value from it.
