HOW TO GET INVOLVED WITH A PROJECT

Sometimes projects are looking for new members. Others will be happy to chat with you about their work. Been invited to join an existing team? Get ready to grow together in our friendly, open community.

Sign up for a Project Support onboarding to become a member and officially join the team. This is required to use the SPH co-working space and be part of our community.

Blueprint Bio
We aim to develop a next-generation enzymatic DNA synthesis technology that enables rapid, low-cost, and sustainable production of complex nucleic acids. This platform will empower synthetic biology, drug discovery, and vaccine development. We have developed a novel engineered enzyme capable of template-independent DNA synthesis that can incorporate reversibly blocked nucleotides. Initial validation experiments confirmed its activity. We are optimising reaction conditions to further improve synthesis efficiency. Our goal is to demonstrate the enzymatic synthesis of a small gene using blocked nucleotides and further engineer the enzyme to enhance performance. The project started at the end of Paola’s PhD on polymerase engineering for xenobiotic nucleic acid (XNA) synthesis, when she explored the idea of engineering a novel polymerase for de novo DNA, RNA, and XNA synthesis. Early experiments showed promising results. During her postdoctoral research at ETH Zurich, she met Jelmi and Jan-Philipp Quast, and together they decided to further develop the project and explore its potential....
EvoLapse
We're building a fully automated, phage-based platform that compresses protein engineering from years into days. The goal: make continuous, directed evolution a standard tool for labs optimising antibodies, enzymes and other functional proteins. Over the past year, three ETH biology/biochemistry students have designed and built a fully automated PACE (Phage-Assisted Continuous Evolution) system from scratch: custom lagoons, pumps, sensors and control software, together with a modular plasmid toolkit for assembling the selection circuits. Our main goal is to get continuous, hands-off directed evolution working end to end: first validating it on a standard benchmark, then using it to optimise proteins like antibodies and enzyme. We first started out as a small fun project working with yeast in the life science lab until we stumbled upon PACE. At that point we thought why not do something with an actual real world application. That is when we started EvoLapse....
hephaistos.bio
We design custom enzymes that let pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturers replace harsh, energy-intensive synthesis with clean, efficient biocatalysis. This includes reactions for which nature never evolved an enzyme. Using advanced algorithms, we design and optimize custom enzymes that efficiently produce small-molecule pharmaceuticals, cutting costs, supply dependencies, and environmental burden. Our ETHZ founding team – Lucas, Jannik, Moritz, Lukas, and Ilya – combines machine learning, structural biology, and chemistry with a strong Basel pharma network. We're running an industrial pilot with the Swiss CRO SpiroChem and are closing our initial funding round. hephaistos.bio began as a student project we presented at the BioIncubate Ignite competition. Back then, we came together with the goal to transition de novo biocatalysis from an academic idea toward an industrial technology....

Their privacy-preserving technology generates discharge reports, medical coding, and other essential documents, seamlessly integrating with existing systems to enhance efficiency across all specialties. ...
Interlit
Interlit is all about advancing the field of protein design, and our vision is to increase humanity's healthspan. We develop new methods, software, and AI models for protein design as well as for therapeutic applications. We are a team of world-class scientists, computational biologists, and protein engineers: the technology we developed broke several world records, and our works established State-of-the-Art results. To describe our journeys at Interlit, we would use the word magical. For instance, the founder worried about finding a cofounder or a pharma client. It felt like sailing through deep ocean thunderstorms: we were lost, unsure of which way to go. Yet, the next day, we wake up and arrive at a new land....
KissOfLife
Half of all fully buried avalanche victims never come out alive, most of them by suffocation. KissOfLife builds the first backpack that pairs an airbag with an active breathing system, so buried riders survive the wait for rescue. We are developing an avalanche backpack that lets you breathe under the snow, combining an airbag with an active breathing system in a single trigger. We have built an MVP that fulfills all functioning criteria, and are now working on a version that can be produced industrially. In parallel, we are developing the industrial design of the pack and preparing the path to safety certification. Our main goal is simple: reduce avalanche related lethal accidents to ZERO....
Menstruation in space
This project aims to create a menstrual collection device to be used in reduced-gravity to allow astronauts to transform menstrual-blood (currently seen as waste) as a resource in regenerative life support systems in long term space missions. Two prototypes have been created and tested in parabolic flights. We are now developing a third new design which builds on the lessons of the last iterations. The project started when discussing feminine hygiene management in space with some experts from space agencies. Turns out, not only is menstrual-blood not talked about in a spaceflight context, but it also contains an incredible amount of potential to be re-used, both on Earth and in space! Whilst the main motivation of this project is from a scientific stand-point, it also aims to open a discussion on "taboo" or "dirty" waste and the extent to which we can create value from it....
Obios (ex Drinkometer)
Obios is redefining obesity treatment with our data-driven prescription system based on the Drinkometer, a medical device, and our software. Targeting the $100B anti-obesity medication market, we enhance prescription precision, moving away from the current trial and error approach. Our Drinkometer tracks ingestive behaviour, the only biomarker directly associated with anti-obesity medications outcome. Our software leverages these insights allowing tailored treatment. This research-based approach enables doctors to make informed prescriptions, improving patient outcomes, cutting healthcare costs and streamlining drug production. With 50 ready-to-buy opinion leaders and strategic pharmaceutical partnerships, Obios is advancing to set a new benchmark in anti-obesity medication prescription....
Softletics
Softletics develops an affordable, self-adjustable prosthetic socket to solve everyday comfort and fit issues, benefiting people with limb differences. We have developed and tested a functional prototype of an upper-limb prosthetic socket that is self-adjustable, breathable, and low-cost. We conducted user testing with people with limb differences to validate comfort, usability, and fit. Based on feedback, we iterated the design and defined a clear product roadmap. Our main goal is to bring Softletics to market as a certified, accessible prosthetic solution that significantly improves daily comfort and independence. Softletics started as a master’s thesis, working closely with one prosthetic user to address real-world comfort and fit challenges. The team later formed around biomedical engineers, including members from ETH, united by the goal of creating a scalable, user-centered prosthetic socket....
