As part of ongoing safety discussions, concerns were raised regarding 3D printers running overnight, when they are unattended.
While such usage has been part of our normal operations for a long time, we are currently required to reassess and align with updated safety expectations. In particular, the goal is on mitigating potential fire risks associated with equipment (in this case 3D printers) running unattended for extended periods of time.
As an immediate measure, and to comply with these requirements, the 3D printers will be shut down overnight and on weekends until further notice. This measure applies to all 3D printers (FDM, XL, DLP) available in the Makerspace at both locations, Zentrum and Hönggerberg.
The printers are available Mon–Fri from 9 am–8 pm.
We understand that this change may significantly impact your workflows, especially for longer prints that rely on continuous operation (e. g. Prusa XL). Please be assured that we are actively working on identifying solutions that would allow safe and reliable 24/7 access again, for example through additional safety measures, such as monitoring systems.
Your input is very important in this process. Understanding how this limitation affects your projects helps us to better represent the needs of the Makerspace community and to work toward a balanced and practical solution.
We will continue to share updates as more information becomes available.
Thank you for your understanding and for being part of this process.
